Ras completed his law degrees. In 1998 the Cape Law Society refused him — not for failing, but for telling the truth: As a Rastafarian, I will continue to use cannabis as sacrament.![]()

He took that fight to the High Court, to the Supreme Court, to the Constitutional Court in 2002 where he lost 5-4. To the African Commission. To the UN. He lost. He never stopped.![]()

On 18 September 2018, he won for ALL of us. The Prince Judgement: it is unconstitutional to criminalize private use, possession & cultivation by adults.![]()

April 2026, Ras was back in the Western Cape High Court with the Rastafari Nation Council & IKS farmers to challenge the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act — because it gives us a right to use with no legal way to obtain it, no protection for backyard dwellers, and no route for the rural farmers who held our landraces for generations.![]()

But we also need to talk about the reality on the ground for Indigenous communities, sacramental users, and legacy farming families.![]()

For them, this plant is not just a product to be locked in a safe. It is sacrament, medicine, livelihood, and farm. Generations have been brought up around the plant.![]()

Many of these families are marginalised and live in conditions where they simply cannot separate their children from their plants. When a single room is home, temple, and farm - the children are there. That is not neglect or encouragement, that is survival in a system that has left them with very few choices.![]()

Their children are not being supplied. They are living in homes where the plant is present. They are seeing the prayer, the cultivation, the respect and the responsibility that comes with it. For them, that understanding is a form of protection that empowers the next generation.![]()

We can and must protect minors AND be mindful not to criminalize culture and poverty.![]()

There is a clear difference between:![]()

Neglect = leaving products accessible, supplying a child, having a child deal.![]()

Reality = a child living in a household where the parents work with the plant sacramentally or for medicine, where they try their best to store it safely but life happens in one shared space.![]()

The solution is not more stigma. It is support - access to safety education, and harm reduction that respects their way of life.![]()
